Constructed in 1986 with major additions in 2002, Fir Croft now contains one of the largest collections of alpine and rock plants in the UK.
Passionately interested in plants since early childhood, the owner Dr Furness has amassed unusual plants from all over the world, and the collection at Fir Croft reflects this. Over 900 Sempervivums, 500 Saxifrages and 500 Primula varieties are grown and some collections are amongst the most extensive in private hands.

This year hundreds of new alpines, including a good number which cannot be seen anywhere else in Britain, have been added to the 3000 plus varieties already grown. Botanical interest is complemented by an attractive layout and by a superb natural backdrop in the midst of the Peak District National Park. Between the tumbling limestone terraces of showy alpines, a small stream cascades over a series of waterfall, through small pools, before finally plunging 7ft into a huge ornamental pond.

Troughs and a 30 foot long raised tufa bed display some of the choicer subjects to perfection. In addition to plants from all over the globe, Dr Furness, a professional botanist, breeds and introduces several new varieties each year. A number of these unique varieties will be on show to the public for the first time this year.

The garden is open for the National Garden Scheme on 25th April, 9th May, 23rd May and 13th June 2004. We are also open for groups by prior arrangement, please write for details. For Nursery opening times see the CONTACT page.
